In the book, Dorothy's slippers were silver, not ruby. Why were they changed for the movie?

L. Frank Baum wrote a book known as The Wizard of Oz, a book that would become a milestone in cinematic history. The movie is known for it's cheesy sets, catchy songs, but perhaps most importantly, the movie is known for a famous scene in which Dorothy taps her ruby slippers together and says "There's no place like home."

Well, at least if you know the movie version of the story, that's how that particular scene happened. If you've only read the book and haven't seen the movie, then you recall that the slippers that Dorothy wears are silver, not ruby. In fact, the color was changed from silver to ruby by the filmmakers for a very simple reason! What was the reason?

Well, since the movie was supposed to be displaying the fact that the land of Oz was in color, they didn't want to show boring silver shoes (which they could have shown in black in white), they wanted to show a shoe that would really stand out on the movie screen! Thus, they choose Ruby Red, and movie goers accepted the slight change with open arms as they stared at the vibrant colors in absolute amazement.
