Volcanoes can be frighteningly dangerous, but they can also be stunningly beautiful. These images capture the beauty of some of the world’s most stunning volcanoes, including Aogashima Volcano in Japan, a small, tropical volcanic island in the Philippine Sea. It is still considered an active volcano though it last erupted in the late 18th-century, killing nearly half of the island’s population and forcing the majority of remaining inhabitants to flee. Today, some 200 brave villagers live here.

Enchanting Kelimutu Volcano sits within Flores Island and is most famous for its three exquisite crater lakes which lie on the summit. The tri-color lakes turn various shades of green, blue, black and even red over time, with their composition altered by volcanic activity deep below.

Kilauea, Hawaii

Hawaii’s volcanoes are known for their active eruptions and otherworldly landscapes. Its youngest volcano, Kilauea, has been erupting continuously since 1983, so much so that the lava plunges straight into the sea, creating fantastic forms of black rocks and insane smoke clouds.

Crater Lake, Oregon

Crater Lake in the southern Cascade Range of Oregon, is one of the most beautiful calderas in the world. It formed by the collapse of a massive stratovolcano known as Mount Mazama about 6850 years ago.

Maelifell Volcano, Iceland

Located on the edge of Myrdalsjökull glacier in Iceland, the Maelifell volcano has a perfect cone and a green moss-covered surface, covered with moss. The black soil around the 656-foot-tall volcano creates an especially surreal landscape.
