These Giant Wasps Look Fake, But Are So Real. Now, They're Terrorizing The U.K.

As summer starts winding down in the Northern Hemisphere, there are some in the U.K. who will be quite happy to see colder temperatures return. This summer, the U.K. experienced a severe giant wasp problem. It might not seem like that big of a deal, but for those caught in the middle, it’s pretty terrifying and painful.

The wasp problem actually started back in the winter.

Another mild winter in the U.K. made sure that there was plenty of food and material available for these giant German wasps, who are twice the size of yellow jackets. With all this raw material, the giant wasps got a jump on their nest building and breeding season.

However, now that their offspring have hatched much earlier than usual, these giant wasps are bored, stuck in overcrowded nests, and drunk.

We’re being literal: these giant German wasps are drunk most of the time.

These wasps mostly eat fruit. However, by this point most of the fresh fruit is gone, which just leaves the rotting, fermented stuff for them to eat.

So what’s the result of these drunk, angry wasps? Well, they’re stinging people in record numbers in the U.K.

The situation has gotten so serious there is now a Wasp Watch website that tracks wasp activity.

One of the tips the website lists is to “[try] to put your fear into perspective. Wasps are not life threatening for most people.” That would be comforting if it didn’t mention “most people.”

If you’re living in the U.K., bolt your windows and lock your doors until winter. And whatever you do, don’t go outside with any food — unless you like wasp stings, of course.

When Puppy Wants To Play With The Hose, Mommy Makes Sure There's No Mess

It’s hot out, and the only thing that this tiny puppy wants is a drink of water. After an afternoon of running and playing with his brothers and sisters, he’s all tuckered out.

But when he can’t find a bowl, he has to ask mom for help. What she does next is so adorable.

Nothing like a little teamwork, am I right? Hopefully the pup paid mom back with lots of snuggles!

Get Eaten Alive By Mosquitos? Fight The Itch With These Household Remedies

There’s no doubt that summer is pretty dang awesome. There’s sun, there’s swimming, there are outdoor concerts, and so much more. But as with anything else, there are drawbacks, like suffocating heat, sunburn, and, perhaps worst of all, itchy bug bites. But you don’t have to spend the season desperately clawing at your skin, nor do you have to shell out a fortune for medicated creams and salves. You probably have all 18 of these home remedies already.

1. Hand sanitizer

This will help prevent infections, and the alcohol’s sting will distract from itching.

2. Vinegar

The acidity in this will stop the itch. You can dab it on or, if you’re totally covered, add a cup or two to a bath and soak. Apple cider vinegar seems to work best.

3. Banana peel

Something of a folk remedy, some people swear by rubbing a banana peel on the skin to relieve itching.

4. Hair dryer

The stuff that makes a bug bite itch is proteins. Proteins break down in heat. Therefore, a hot blast from a hair dryer can break down the proteins and help stop the itch. Just don’t burn yourself.

5. Hemorrhoid cream

Well, it’s anti-itch and anti-inflammation, isn’t it?

6. Lemon or lime juice

The acidity is anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial, so it can prevent infection. If you’re going to use this, though, stay out of sunlight for a bit because citrus juice and sunlight can cause blistering.

7. Scotch tape

Sticking a piece of tape over an insect bite is something some people swear by, but there’s no real factual evidence to back it up. It’ll act as a kind of Band-Aid, though.

8. Toothpaste

Menthol, which gives toothpaste its minty flavor, will provide an itchy bite with a cooling sensation.

9. Aloe vera

Aloe is anti-inflammatory and cools on contact, which is a one-two punch against itching. For an extra cooling sensation, keep it in the fridge.

10. Aspirin

Some people swear by crushing up an aspirin or two and making a paste out of it with a little water, then dabbing it on the bites.

11. Oatmeal

Remember getting an oatmeal bath when you had chicken pox? Same principle. Oatmeal has anti-inflammatory properties.

12. Clear nail polish

This is especially effective against chiggers, which actually burrow into the skin, because it blocks off their oxygen and suffocates them. Some people say it works for mosquito bites, too, but don’t apply it to broken skin.

13. Basil

Basil contains thymol and camphor, which both relieve itching. Perfect for gardeners!

14. Baking soda

Making a paste from baking soda and dabbing it on, or dipping a cloth in baking soda dissolved in water relieves itching.

15. Ice

Ice reduces swelling and numbs the area, making the itch less obnoxious.

16. Mud

Mud is actually really good for soothing skin, and also draws out infections.

17. Salt water

Salt water will draw out the itch and also has antiseptic properties, so if you’re vacationing by the beach, you’re set. If not, you can add salt to a bath or make a salt paste.

18. Bonus: If there’s nothing around to stop the itch, press an X into the bite with your fingernail.

The pressure will distract you from the itch. Just be careful not to break the skin.

Now that you’re prepared for anything and know the secrets to combatting nasty bites, you can be confident in staying out all night chasing fireflies. We do recommend a good bug spray, though.

This Dog Is My Spirit Animal: She Rescues A Ball From A Pool...Without Going In

Sure, most animals love lounging around in the pool on a hot summer day, but it’s not for everyone.

This adorable girl wasn’t keen on diving in when her ball landed in the waters one afternoon. Maybe she had just been groomed and didn’t want to spoil her doggie ‘do? Whatever the reason, she comes up with a perfectly genius solution for keeping her paws from getting too wet.

Be sure to watch ’til the very end:

This deserves an instant replay:

She can just shake off those back legs.

What an adorable little smarty-pants! I wonder if those problem-solving skills ever get her in trouble…not that you could ever stay mad at this cutie for long.

This Lab's Reaction To Gardening Is Too Much For Me...What's He Thinking?!

Many people are born without green thumbs — that’s just a fact. Then there are others who just cannot stop gardening, even when there’s no room left in the garden, or the house, for that matter.

Then there’s this pup, who is really into gardening, but maybe for different reasons than the typical landscaper…

For some reason, I’m suddenly and inexplicably thirsty…

If You See A Rash Like This On Your Body, Head To The Doctor...Now!

We all know about covering up when we’re outside, not only to protect our skin from sun damage, but also to avoid getting bitten by Lyme disease-carrying ticks. This disease can cause major, long-term health problems that stay with people for years, including everything from palsy, partial paralysis, and neurological problems to vertigo and cognitive issues. In short, it’s sneaky, it’s creepy, and it’s a major problem.

Yet if the disease is caught, especially in its early phases, it’s easily treatable. The trick is just knowing what to look for.

One of the most common early signs is a rash that radiates out from the site of the bite within a few days.

This radial pattern is actually the bacteria spreading out from the bite. The rashes, seen here, take on a distinctive “bullseye” pattern.

A rash like this will appear from an infected bite about 70-80% of the time, so it’s a pretty good indicator.

However, not all Lyme-infected bites will result in a rash. Other early symptoms include flu-like symptoms, fatigue, fever, and joint stiffness.

Lyme is spread via deer ticks, and it’s caused by the Borelia bacteria.

The best way to avoid Lyme disease is to prevent tick bites. If you’re going to be in thick brush, wear long pants and sleeves. Wearing light colors will help you spot ticks, too. After being in thickly wooded areas, do a thorough check for ticks. If you find any, remove them with a tweezer, and make sure to get the head and mandibles out. Removing any ticks quickly drastically decreases the chance of infection.

Don’t let the fear of Lyme disease prevent you from having fun outdoors this summer. However, you should remember that just like everything else, safety precautions need to be taken to ensure that the fun doesn’t get cut short!

For more information, you can check out any of the Lyme disease research and prevention organizations listed here, or talk to a doctor about Lyme disease prevention.
