7 Myths About Phones That People Actually Believe

Would you be able to live without your phone? I use mine for just about everything — banking, navigation, scheduling, you name it. I would be completely lost in the world if I didn’t have my phone…both literally and figuratively.

Because smartphones are so popular, people are always looking to challenge our love for them by perpetuating ridiculous myths. Here are a few rumors and myths about smartphones that definitely aren’t true.

1. Closing apps improves your battery life.

As it turns out, it doesn’t. All of that app-closing actually drains your battery even more in the long run, since your phone has to do much more work to reload all of that information every time you open a closed app.

2. Turning on airplane mode will prolong battery life.

Sure, it’ll save a bit of battery life, but not as much as you’d hope or think. A test was organized to see how much battery life it actually saved, and it concluded that leaving a phone on airplane mode will only keep it alive for 30 minutes longer.

3. You can only use the charger that came with your phone.

While you shouldn’t use really cheap chargers to power your phone for a number of reasons, you can technically use any capable charger to keep your phone going.

4. A phone camera with a high amount of megapixels will take better pictures.

It’s not the amount of megapixels that contributes to taking high-quality photos, but the size of them. The bigger the megapixels, the better the image.

5. You should let your phone battery run out before charging it.

Because smartphones now use lithium ion batteries, it’s okay to charge your phone whenever you want without worrying about killing your battery in the long run.

6. Put your phone in the freezer to maintain battery life.

Please do not do this. A phone’s optimal operating temperature falls somewhere between 35 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit, so exposing it to temperatures below or above that will actually hurt your phone’s battery life and cause other major problems.

7. You shouldn’t charge your phone overnight.

Plugging your phone in and letting it charge for eight hours is fine if you’re using a good charger. It won’t hurt your battery life, and it won’t ruin your phone in any way.

Don’t let these myths fool you! You are a more enlightened person now, and your phone will thank you for it. Go forth and spread the news that these myths are totally false.

16 Crazy Myths That People Believe About Their Own Bodies

The human body is an amazing thing. It can fight off diseases, digest food, and regulate all of your bodily functions automatically.

But there are things that hundreds of people believe about the human body that aren’t true at all. In fact, you might believe in some of these myths as well. Luckily for you, we’re here to debunk them for you today.

1. You can’t lose weight because you have a slow metabolism.

Sure, you may not be naturally thin like those people who can eat french fries and pizza every day without gaining an ounce, but you can still maintain your desired body weight fairly easily. That depends more on your personal goals and actions than any sort of bodily predisposition.

2. Flat feet are prone to injury.

Studies show that people with flat feet are actually less prone to injury. People with normal or high arches are more susceptible to stress fractures and strains.

3. Your metabolism slows down as you get older.

This is true, but it’s not as drastic as you might think. The real culprit here is not your metabolism, but your body’s ability to gain and keep muscle mass. The metabolism does slow down a bit, but not enough to make you gain insane amounts of weight or anything like that. Your body just looks different because you can’t maintain all those massive muscles you had in your twenties.

4. Shaving makes hair grow back thicker and coarser.

This one was technically debunked way back in 1928, but people still believe it. This is actually just an optical illusion. When hair grows back, it looks darker because it’s perpendicular to your skin for a while until it’s long enough to lay flat again. That makes it look coarser and thicker.

5. You continue burning calories after an intense cardio session.

If you are looking to burn calories, I’m sure you’ve heard that the best way to do it is through High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). While it’s true that HIIT will burn more calories after the workout, the amount is so insignificant that you might as well just stick to your regular (and less soul-crushing) cardio routine.

6. Healthy teeth are white.

The natural color of human teeth is yellow. Pearly whites look nice, but they’re actually not natural. In fact, chemical whitening does more harm than good. Bleaching them actually damages enamel.

7. You can’t gain muscle because you have a fast metabolism.

If you have a hard time building muscle, your metabolism isn’t to blame. The reason skinny people have a harder time putting on muscle is because they aren’t eating enough protein-packed food to do so. Eat more and you will see results. It doesn’t get better than that, right?

8. You can suck out the poison from a snake bite.

Sucking out the poison of a snake bite is actually pretty dangerous. It can cause an infection in the wounded area and make things worse. Instead, you should wash the bite with soap and water, keep the bitten area lower than the heart, and seek medical attention.

9. Eating six small meals a day boosts your metabolism.

This theory states that eating six small meals per day helps keep your metabolism going throughout the whole day. Research shows that there’s technically nothing wrong with eating six smaller meals, but it also concludes that the body doesn’t react to this meal plan much differently than it does to eating three meals a day.

10. Cold air and wet hair will make you sick.

Your mom was wrong, okay? I know that’s hard for you to accept, but hanging out in the cold or going to sleep with wet hair will not give you a cold. The virus associated with the common cold is actually all around you, waiting to strike at any moment.

11. Eating certain foods will boost your metabolism.

Okay, it’s pretty obvious that none of us understand how the metabolism works. I’m sure you’ve all heard the myth that eating cinnamon, red peppers, and similar foods will boost your metabolism. That’s just not true. It might give it a temporary spike, but it won’t lead to anything permanent.

12. You need eight hours of sleep a night.

Every person needs a different amount of sleep, but researchers concluded that the average person can do just fine on five or six hours of sleep a night. And sleeping for longer than eight hours can actually do more harm than good. Just do what feels best for you!

13. Reading in dim light harms your eyes.

While reading in the dark will cause eye strain, it’s nothing serious. Almost no permanent damage can happen from reading in the dark for long periods of time.

14. Fasting slows your metabolism.

Seriously…we could have just called this piece “No One Understands Their Metabolism.” Studies show that you can go up to three days without food without damaging your metabolism. It would take nearly a week without food for your metabolism to undergo a drastic change.

15. Peeing on a jellyfish sting makes it feel better.

In lab tests, urine actually makes the pain of a jellyfish sting even worse. Basically, no good can come from enduring a sting and having your buddy pee on you.

16. Gaining muscle boosts your metabolism.

Gaining muscle doesn’t boost your metabolism that much, so if you are picking up the weights for that reason alone, I’m sorry. If anything, building a pound of muscle will help you burn about five more calories.

You've Heard These Myths Before, And Maybe You Believed Them, But They're False

There are a few myths out there that we’ve all come across at some point, and if you hear something enough, it’s only natural to believe that it’s true. But what these commonly known “facts” all have in common is that they’re not true. Most of them were made up on the basis of misconceptions, misunderstandings, and downright intentional hoaxes.

Check out these 23 “facts” below to see what’s really going on here.

1. You lose most of your body heat through your head.

This is true — but only in infants. After infancy, you lose just as much heat from your arms as you do from your head. The only differences is that, unless you’re wearing a hat, your head is often exposed to the elements.

2. Cell phones give you cancer.

Cell phones use radiofrequency, not radiation. Ionizing radiation has been shown to cause DNA damage and cancer, but radiofrequency has not been shown to do that. Gab away, friends.

3. Different places on your tongue taste different things.

You can sense all tastes on all parts of your tongue.

4. Fortune cookies are a Chinese tradition.

They’re a Chinese food tradition now, but the custom of putting paper messages inside of cookies is actually a Japanese-American invention. It was later appropriated by Chinese-American restauranteurs.

5. Shaving makes your hair grow in thicker and darker.

When hair grows, it forms a tapered end. When you shave it, you cut it off at the thickest, darkest part, so the remaining stubble does look thicker and darker. But it’s not. The growth rate is unaffected, and if you let it grow, it will be the same color and texture as before.

6. Sugar makes you hyper.

Actually, it doesn’t. Studies show that when parents were told that their children had been given sugar, they believed that the kids were more hyper — even when they were only given placebos. The correlation might come from the fact that sugary treats are often eaten at parties, where kids are more excited to begin with.

7. MSG gives you headaches.

Technically, the jury’s still out on this, but there’s no scientific data to support it. All evidence is anecdotal at this point.

8. Glass is a liquid.

Glass is actually an amorphous solid, not a supercooled liquid. Old windows that are thicker at the bottom? They were just poorly made.

9. Sushi means “raw fish.”

It actually translates to “sour tasting,” and refers to the rice, not the fish.

10. Undercover police officers are required to identify themselves.

This myth was actually created by Hollywood. Undercover cops don’t have to tell you who they are, so don’t do anything shady.

11. The monster is named Frankenstein.

The name “Frankenstein” refers to the doctor who created the monster in Mary Shelley’s famous horror novel. His name is Victor Frankenstein. The creature he creates out of body parts never has a name.

12. Wet hair makes you sick.

Wrong again. External temperatures have no effect on your body’s resistance to germs. Although having wet hair in the cold is certainly uncomfortable, it won’t necessarily make you sick.

13. Cold weather makes you sick.

Viruses travel more easily through cold air, which holds less moisture. That’s why people are more likely to fall ill in the winter. But you’re more likely to catch a cold while cooped up inside with germy people than you are outside in the snow.

14. Alcohol keeps you warm.

It makes you feel warm because it dilates your blood vessels, giving your face a warm, flushed feeling. But it also drops your core temperature, actually making you colder. If you feel warm, it’s because your surroundings feel warmer compared to your cooling body.

15. The moon has a dark side.

The same side of the moon always faces the Earth, which is why its surface looks the same each night. The “dark” side is the same color, but it’s just in shadow. “Dark” refers to the fact that the sun doesn’t shine on it.

16. Caffeine dehydrates you.

Caffeine does have a slight diuretic effect (as in, it makes you pee), but a cup of coffee won’t dry you out. That’s because it’s mostly water — which is also why it makes you have to pee.

17. Different sides of your brain do different things.

You’ve probably heard the whole “left-brain, right-brain” thing, but the brain is not so clean and organized. There’s no real distinction, but it seems that skills come from various places. Any part of the brain can contribute to any activity.

18. Dogs sweat through their tongues.

This is more of a misunderstanding. Dogs do regulate their temperature by panting, but it’s not sweat. Dogs actually sweat from their paw pads.

19. The iron maiden was a medieval torture device.

As much as we all love it, this thing never existed in the Middle Ages. It was actually invented as a showpiece in the 18th century to shock circus audiences. Think of them as the bogus Internet rumors of the 1700s.

20. Puritans wore black with big collars and buckled hats.

They actually dressed just like anyone else in late Elizabethan times, with a full range of colors depending on the current fashion. The somber black wardrobe was invented later.

21. Salt makes water boil faster.

People swear by this, but it’s actually a scientific impossibility. Salt raises the boiling point of water, which means that adding salt actually makes water take longer to boil.

22. You have to wait 24 hours to report a missing person.

If someone you know is missing, don’t wait a full day! This dangerous rumor is very false. You can report someone missing at any point.

23. Vaccines cause autism.

No, no, no they don’t. This myth became an issue due to some faulty, manipulated research. The doctor who fabricated the study even had his medical license revoked. Please vaccinate your kids. Because you know what’s way worse than autism? Polio.
