Beijing Became Nearly Invisible Earlier Today, And Human Beings Are To Blame

We all know that China is one of the most densely populated countries in the world, so it makes sense that its biggest cities experience some of the worst smog on record. While it may be easy to ignore the effects of pollution on our planet, the finite nature of life on Earth becomes abundantly clear when you see what people in large cities have to deal with on a daily basis.

As officials from around the world convened to discuss climate change in Paris this month, a thick blanket of smog rendered much of Beijing invisible.

Tianeman Square — which sits in the center of Beijing, China — attracts thousands of tourists each year because of its architectural beauty and historical significance.

But earlier today, tourists and locals at the site had to put on masks to combat the effects of intense smog.

Over the course of a few hours, the scene went from beautiful and bright to dark and dismal. Not long after that, strong winds swept the smog away again.

Most alarmingly of all, the area was met with 25 times more smog than is acceptable by the World Health Organization. At its worst, the entire city was suffocated by pollutants.

Chinese officials announced plans to combat atmospheric pollution and get a handle on emissions back in September, and those changes couldn’t possibly come soon enough.

Situations like this underscore the importance of climate summits like the one that just took place in Paris. The sad reality is that this phenomenon is completely manmade, and only human intervention can put a stop to the relentless damage it’s causing worldwide.

Every Fall, Something Absolutely Breathtaking Happens At This Buddhist Temple

The Gu Guanyin Buddhist Temple in the Zhongnan Mountains of China is beautiful in its own right, but that’s not why hordes of tourists flock to the historic location around this time every year.

While those of us in the suburbs with big backyards find the whole idea of thousands of leaves falling onto our properties — ugh, raking — this particular temple counts it as a blessing.

And it’s pretty clear why that is.

And it

It’s believed that the tree was planted during Emperor Taizong of Tang’s reign (626-649).

A natural occurrence as spectacular as this really makes you rethink raking as being a hassle.

Take a moment to truly appreciate the beauty of nature!

This Doctor Proves That Helping Patients Takes More Than Medical Training

Xin Er (not her real name) was born with a heart condition that required surgery at Zhejiang University Hospital. This was a lot for the little girl to take in, and as the event approached, she became more and more anxious. Upon entering the operating room, she immediately started crying.

That’s when Shi Zhuo, Deputy Director of Cardiac Surgery, stepped in. Not only was he the man who performed the life-saving surgery, but he was also the one who calmed her down before it began.

Before entering the operating room, Xin Er started crying in fear.

She just wanted her dad, so cardiac surgeon Shi Zhuo comforted her before the operation.

He showed her some cartoons on his phone, which calmed her down and quelled some of her fears about the surgery.

These photos were taken by anesthetist Jin Ziying, who says that the surgery was successful and that Xin Er is recovering well. She’s expected to be released this week. Frightened children (and adults) are nothing new to the surgical team. They understand the anxiety that comes with undergoing major surgery.

“In reality, it doesn’t matter whether it’s a boy or a girl. They all get scared in the operating theater,” Dr. Shi said. “As parents, we understand that the children are scared, and we can appreciate the worry of the family.” When he saw the photos, Xin Er’s father was overwhelmed by the doctor’s kindness.

He Was Having A Normal Day...Until Something Crashed Through His Roof

We’ve all been here before: you’re relaxing, watching TV, and playing on your phone when something startles you. It could be a knock, a noise, or a pet moving around, but the one thing that all of these disturbances have in common is that they’re completely unwelcome.

One man in China’s Shanxi Province recently experienced this jarring phenomenon…only instead of a run-of-the-mill sound, he experienced the unholy din of a rocket engine falling through his roof.

The engine is thought to have come from a craft that recently launched a satellite into orbit.

According to U.K. publication SinoDefense, “Debris fell into a house after [the shuttle’s] launch yesterday.”

You think?

Oddly enough, this wasn’t the only incident.

There are several other reports of space debris being found within a 300-mile radius from the country’s official launch site.

Based on preliminary reports, no one was actually hurt in this freak accident. Let’s just hope that the skies stop raining shuttle parts.

These Foods Are Considered Chinese Delicacies, But We Recommend Going With Your Gut

Let me start off by saying that I definitely can’t claim to be a foodie, since I’ve pretty much only eaten Eggo waffles for the past two weeks. In fact, I’ve been picked on for quite some time now for my lack of culinary curiosity. I suppose that I just enjoy sticking to what I know and love.

And based on Kevin Munns‘ Chinese food blog, I have never been more confident about my tendency to stay in that comfort zone. In other words, you probably won’t be able to make me “l’eggo my Eggo.” Once you see these foods, you’ll understand why.

1. Dried starfish

2. Dried chicken

It’s extra crispy.

3. Dried octopus

I’m noticing a trend.

4. Dried lizard

5. Pig colon

6. Pig ears

7. Pig stomach

8. Pig brain

Well, at least we know that they’re not wasteful.

9. Pig heart

10. Pigeon

11. Turtle soup

12. Snails

13. Duck tongue

14. Frogs

15. Congealed duck blood

16. Duck intestines

17. Eels

I know that I’m supposed to want to try new things, but I’m going to have to side with my gut on this one…which means that I won’t be consuming anything else’s guts in the near future.

You Might Have Heard Tales Of Fallen Angels, But You've Probably Never Seen One

Angels have been depicted in art for thousands of years. They’re typically represented as beautiful, youthful ideals, full of glowing halos and powerful wings, or as adorable babies (classically known as putti) with chubby cheeks and mischievous grins.

Then, there’s the angel sculpture created by artists Sun Yuan and Peng Yu, a duo hailing from China. This depiction takes a much more realistic — and unsettling — approach to the concept of angels.

The sculpture, created in a highly realistic style, shows an elderly angel who seems to have fallen mid-flight.

The angel in this piece, titled simply Angel, takes the form of an old woman with a wrinkled face and sparse hair.

Her aged wings have lost their feathers and she seems weak and vulnerable, perhaps even dead. Her helplessness and frailty seem at odds with the general idea of an immortal and powerful supernatural being, but that’s the point.

The piece is a startling reminder of the fragility of all things, even the things whose power we may have taken for granted.

The installation also includes this net cage, which appears to be some kind of trap. The idea of a trapped angel adds another layer of meaning to the piece.

From here, it seems like the angel, trapped inside a cage, is languishing. Perhaps it’s because she can’t fulfill her angelic duties of helping those in need.

Though the sculpture looks real, it’s actually made of silica, fiberglass, steel, and mesh.

Sun Yuan and Pengu Yu have been known to use much more macabre materials, including human tissue, in their pieces, but this one is wholly synthetic.

There are probably hundreds of interpretations that one could make about this sculpture, so we’ll let you decide which one you think is correct — if there can be a correct one at all.

Panda Daycare Might Just Be The Cutest Thing That Has Ever Existed

The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in China, has been helping the notoriously reserved cuties keep their population from plummeting. Through both natural and artificial breeding methods, they’ve been able to produce plenty of sweet babies since their establishment in 1987.

And with all those tiny tykes crawling around, they of course need a place to spend their time. That’s where the world’s cutest daycare center comes in handy.

The facility keeps the playful cuties happy and taken care of while they grow big and strong.

Piles of black and white adorableness, as far as the eye can see!

As the ancestral homeland to pandas for over 4,000 years, it’s no surprise they feel right at home in the area.

I think this little guy is looking for a hug…

“Anyone wanna play a quick round of HORSE?”

Visitors are welcome to the park for an up-close and educational panda experience.

When you aren’t distracted by the sweet faces of the kiddos, the grounds also feature incredible gardens and beautiful landscaping.

You might even get to experience the joy this employee feels with a stampede of snuggles!
