Syrian Refugee Swims For Seven Hours To Reach Europe

There’s something about swimming in open water that I find quite unsettling. Perhaps it’s the unknowable enormity of the ocean or maybe it’s just the thought of the horrible sea monsters which could be lurking in the deep. But with his passion for swimming, Ameer Mehtr was certainly no stranger to open water. However, it was desperation which drove him to swim for seven hours from Turkey to Greece.

A Syrian refugee, he left his homeland in May after losing everything he had as a result of Syria’s civil war. Having already trained with the Syrian national swimming team in Damascus, he was a very strong swimmer. But to prepare for the crossing he had to spend almost every day training with a swimming coach off the coast of Beirut.

A number of refugees have crossed the Aegan Sea from Turkey to the Greek island of Samos and Mehtr could have paid smugglers to help him make the crossing. However, he simply didn’t have the money. Instead, he spent hours studying maps and currents before taking the plunge.

He had to evade Turkish police, who were looking for people smugglers, for more than an hour. He then swam for seven hours with just a few possessions, including some flavoured dates, tied to his waist. He then had to walk another seven miles before he could register as a refugee. The journey was tortuous but he believes it was worth it.

But it didn’t stop there. He had to spend a further month getting to his current location – a refugee camp in Sweden. Speaking to the The Sunday Times, Mehtr stated: “Every second of the way I thought I was going to die. But I kept going. I just kept looking at the cliffs in front of me and thinking ‘Here is my future’.”

Syrian refugees jump off a boat as they arrive on the Greek island of Lesbos Sept. 3. The International Organization for Migration says 1,500-2,000 refugees are taking the route through Greece, Macedonia and Serbia to Hungary every day and that there is

Almost a million migrants have arrived to Europe by sea this year, with many taking huge risks in the hope of finding a better life, away from war and persecution. “I’m far from the only one who has made this journey – there are many more who have been swimming,” Mehtr stated.

Italian Authorities Seize 847 Illegal Shotguns En Route From Turkey To Belgium

If the threat of terrorist attacks in mainland Europe hasn’t already got you uneasy, then the escalation of tensions between Russia and Turkey this week probably has. The world isn’t a particularly nice place to be at the moment and I’m seriously considering putting myself forward for this manned mission to Mars they’ve got coming up.

So with the world falling to bits, here is some more pretty disturbing news.

A large shipment of shotguns without transportation permits has been seized by the Italian police at the Port of Trieste. The 847 Turkish-made Winchester shotguns worth about €500,000 were on their way to Belgium. With Turkey already in the headlines following the downing of a Russian jet, this is not the front page news their government needed.

Gun shipments from Turkey are nothing new in Trieste, but this time the shipment was missing a key document… authorisation for transportation in the EU. Pretty key.

“A major seizure,” the chief prosecutor of Trieste, Carlo Mastelloni, commented, stressing that the Guardia di Finanza (Financial Police) “have done well for encouraging controls in the port, a sensitive area that affects business in the commercial city of Trieste.”

With Italy now intercepting illegal shotguns and neighbours Greece dealing with a massive migrant crisis, the Mediterranean is a pretty volatile area right now. Given the current terror threat in Europe, the seizure in Trieste has drawn “an extremely high level of attention,” said Lieutenant Colonel Gabriel Baron, commander of the Guardia di Finanza in Trieste.

Turkish authorities are yet to respond, despite the Italians accusing the Turkish exporter of unauthorised weapons’ trading. It remains to be seen whether we’ll have another diplomatic incident, but as a supporter of peace and European cooperation, I hope not.

This Looks Like An Alien Phenomenon, But It's Happening Right Here On Earth

There’s something pretty amazing happening to Lake Tuz in central Turkey. This hypersaline (that is, super-salty) lake is an ecological hotspot, and it’s currently experiencing a bloom of Dunaliella salina algae.

This algae turns the whitish water a deep crimson color. If we didn’t know any better, we’d assume that these surreal-looking photos were altered.

The white areas you see on the shoreline are salt deposits. Lake Tuz is the second largest lake in Turkey, and it’s one of the largest hypersaline bodies of water on Earth.

The normal color of the water lies just beyond this red bloom. The water is so salty that it’s naturally white in color.

These photos were taken on July 16, which marked the height of the bloom.

Lake Tuz is only a lake for half of the year. The water evaporates during the dry season, at which point the lake turns into a salt flat. During the rainy season, the water comes back, and the area becomes home to a number of wild birds, including flamingos, geese, and kestrels. In 2001, the lake was deemed a protected area.

The flamingos don’t mind the color at all. In fact, they eat this red algae, which contributes to their pink hue!

The phenomenon might seem alarming, but it’s all just part of a natural cycle.

And the Dunaliella salina algae isn’t harmful. In fact, it’s used in many dietary supplements and cosmetics.

A crimson lake might sound like something out of a horror movie, but all’s well at Lake Tuz. If anything, this natural wonder is pretty amazing, and it certainly makes the world a little more colorful!
