When These Old Friends Get Together, They Do Something Ridiculously Impressive

When you get together with friends what do you do? Perhaps you play some cards, get drinks, reminisce about funny, fond memories? Well, whatever you do, it’s a safe bet that you guys don’t get together to build a boat. (Or if you do, more power to you!)

This group of college friends promised each other ten years ago that they would come together every once in a while and build something cool. They’ve made some smaller items — a cart, a paddle boat, a trebuchet — but this time they wanted to build something epic…

They began by cutting out pieces of marine plywood.

Because this project was going to take some time, they needed a tent in case it rained.

Can you tell what this is shaping up to be?

They set up the keep on a system of lines to hold it up straight and began attaching the plywood sides.

Copper wire held the sections together.

Next, they installed thwarts. These would help hold the boat’s shape and provide seating.

To seal the joints and cover the copper wire, they heated up some epoxy resin.

Applying the resin was a long process, and missing a spot could prove disastrous.

Once the resin dried, they decided to take it out for a quick test run.

Transportation was a little awkward….

But the first test run was a success!

They brought it back to their courtyard to add some finishing touches, like splitting the boat for easy transport.

And of course, a Norse-themed head on the bow.

They then drove their new boat up north and found a peaceful spot to take it out.

And it worked great!

Not bad for a homemade Viking ship!

Most people are lucky if they can get their friends together to solve a puzzle! This definitely inspired me to gather some of my friends more often and do something unique — making new memories is always worth the extra time.
