Nintendo decided not to license any of their characters for movies after one bad experience. Find out what happened!

Nintendo knows how to make games with great story. Sure, Mario may be a little two-dimensional: monster steals princess, hero plumber sets out of a dangerous adventure to rescue her, rinse and repeat. But take games like “The Legend of Zelda” and “Metroid” into consideration, and it's easy to see there is a treasure trove of movie opportunities—that Nintendo isn't interested in.

You may recall a little film by the name of “Super Mario Bros.” Back in 1993 that was loosely based on the video game characters and their struggle to fight the Koopa forces. The movie was critically panned and was said to be too flashy with not enough story substance. It was labeled as a novelty and cash-grab with a recognizable name. Nintendo wasn't pleased.

Because of that disaster, Nintendo has chosen not to license out its properties to the Hollywood big-wigs, even though they clamor for them. A pitch for a fully CGI “Legend of Zelda” film shot down in 2007. It portrayed the heroes in a Disney-esque fashion and had a rather generic fantasy setting. Not all that inspiring.

Chances are we'll never see our favorite Nintendo characters on the big screen again. After all, Nintendo is doing just fine selling their consoles and games and don't need to get a piece of that Hollywood action.
