Poop is more alive than you think—and it can save your life!

You may have always though poop was just a condensed clump of discarded food you ate after all the nutrients have been sucked out by your body (surely you've seen The Magic School Bus). However, that stuff coming out of your behind isn't all fiber. In fact, the startling majority is dead and alive bacteria—and it's mostly alive.

Bacteria, as gross as it is and as much as our “antibacterial soap” wants to kill it, makes up much of who we are. Bacteria coexists with the human bowel to keep bad bacteria down and help produce vitamins.

Poop can also be a lifesaver. A person with ulcerative colitis, which is a colon filled with bleeding ulcers, have intense cramps, bloody diarrhea, and severe stomach pains. Fecal microbiota transplant (F.M.T.) can be used to save the day. That's the process of taking the poop out of a healthy person's digestive tract and put it into the ill one. This gross process inserts healthy bacteria and fiber into the system and manages to keep the ulcers in check. Poop, just what the doctor ordered.
