A hexagon is a shape that has six edges and six vertices. Beehive cells are hexagonal, and the prefix ‘hexa’ means six in Greek. The reason that honeycomb is composed of hexagons, rather than any other shape, is that the hexagon tiles the plane with minimal surface area.

All the sides of a regular hexagon are the same length – in other words, congruent. All its interior angles are the same size too. To find the measure of the interior angles, we know that the sum of all the angles is 720 degrees (from above) and there are six angles. 720 divided by 6 equals 120. The measure of the interior angle of a regular hexagon is therefore 120 degrees.

A regular hexagon can be divided into nine pentagons that are congruent to each other. The three pentagons in the center will then form a smaller regular hexagon. Each of the nine pentagons can, in turn, be divided into four right angles. Seeing that each pentagon contains four right angles and each regular hexagon contains nine pentagons, a regular hexagon can be divided into 36 right angles.

The hexagon has been long favored in design, most often implemented in tile designs. The famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright was a big fan of the hexagon and designed with it when creating a large number of seminal works of beauty and harmony.
