As it turns out, while stereotyping someone is considered negative, and socially unacceptable—it can be an accurate tool used to predict someone's opinions and behaviours. More so, by stereotyping someone, you are able to predict information about someone turns out to be accurate more often than you think!
According to scientists, the accuracy of stereotypes can range anywhere from .4 to .9. Essentially, these numbers represent a correlation between stereotypes and accurate information acquired by using stereotypes. There is an average of around .8 for cultural stereotypes!
Many psychologists talk about how inaccurate stereotyping is, but as it turns out, the average correlation from a psychological hypothesis is around .20. This means, essentially, that stereotypes are much more accurate than most psychologists.
