The Jimi Hendrix Experience was a rock band formed in 1966. As the name suggests, famous singer, songwriter and guitarist Jimi Hendrix was the group's leader. Between 1966 and 1969, the band released three successful albums - all of which made Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. The group was highly influential in the development of hard rock and heavy metal.
Apart from frontman Jimi Hendrix, the band consisted of bassist and singer Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell. Mitchell auditioned for the band in October 1966 and beat out many talented candidates. It came down to him and Aynsley Dunbar. They flipped a coin to decide who would become the band's drummer, and Mitchell won.
Mitchell went on to be known for drumming on songs like "Manic Depression" and "Little Miss Strange." After The Jimi Hendrix Experience split up in 1969, he pursued several other musical projects including performing at Woodstock. In the 1970s and 80s, Mitchell lived in semi-retirement in Europe, occasionally playing and performing. In 2005, he was named the 23rd greatest drummer of all time by Rolling Stone.
