‘Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.’ Martin Luther King.
That is one of the very many quotes I’ve seen posted up on social media in the aftermath of these truly devastating attacks. It’s hard for anyone to comprehend what the people of Paris have been through and the aftershocks of such a devastating night will be felt throughout the world in the weeks and months to come.
But horrific events like this do bring communities together. All around the world people have been showing their support to those affected. However small the gesture, people have been showing their solidarity.
Here’s how the world reacted:
The Sydney Opera House has been illuminated in the colours of the French flag
As has one of the world trade centres
All around the world landmarks are being lit up in solidarity
People have held a vigil in Sydney
Candles burn outside the French embassy
The world’s leading political figures have been showing their support for those affected:
David Cameron released a statement on twitter
Angela Merkel signs a book of condolence at the French embassy
François Hollande has said: “Facing terror, there is a nation that knows how to defend, able to mobilize its forces and, once again, will defeat the terrorists.”
Obama released a statement saying:
Many celebrities have also wished the people of Paris well as they try to recover from this brutal attack:
Charlie Hebdo artist, Joann Sfar, gave his reaction:
Many ordinary people have been changing their profile pictures and sharing images as a show of support:
The terrorist attack has left 127 dead and more than 200 injured after Kalashnikov shootings, grenade and suicide strikes. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected by these attacks.
