In news that will only make you despair even more about the current situation in Syria, a Russian jet has been shot down after apparently violating Turkish airspace.
According to the reports, the Russian defence ministry said the Su-24 jet was on a bombing mission in Syria and crashed after it came under artillery attack from the ground. Moscow has insisted that the bomber did not enter Turkish airspace, however Turkish authorities says the plane was warned repeatedly before they opened fire.
In mixed news, Russia have said that the pilots ejected from the plane – however have had no contact with them since. More bad news for Vladimir Putin it seems…
Russia has confirmed that one of its jets has been shot down over the border of Turkey and Syria
Photos also show a pilot escaping the cockpit before the plane went down
The plane came down in the Kizildag region of the country
With the Russian people already reeling from the downing of a passenger jet recently, this latest news is not the sort of thing they’ll want to see. On top of that, this is not the first time Turkish forces have opened fire in the last month. A few weeks ago Turkish jets shot down an unidentified drone that had also violated Turkey’s airspace.
Rami Abdurrahman, who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said the warplane crashed in the Turkomen Mountains region in the coastal province of Latakia.
Whether this was a miscommunication or something more sinister remains to be seen. One thing is for sure however, Putin will not be pleased and will take appropriate action against Turkey.
