Think about how much grease, grime, and gunk you get on your cookware from just one meal. Now imagine that piling up over 70 years and you’ll know what this guy was working against when he purchased this vintage cast iron skillet.
But he was totally up for the challenge of refurbishing the antique item back to usable condition for his own kitchen.
The skillet was probably made sometime between 1940 and 1946.
(Banana for scale.)
And not cleaned much, if at all, since.
This is after an hour of serious scrubbing with some steel wool.
The burnt-on grease had become “hard as stone,” as he describes it.
After hours of frustrated attempts, he decided to chip at the gunk with a small knife.
Not the safest of methods, but the grease finally started to flake off!
Then he slathered the skillet in vegetable oil and popped it in the oven for seasoning.
The sleek, shiny result! Ready for frying up some grub once again.
“Best d*mn fried egg I’ve ever eaten.”

He admits the skillet obviously isn’t back to perfectly mint condition, but considering how many years it’s been around, it’s definitely a major improvement. Besides, that just adds to its charm!
