Traveling to Crete, Greece sounds like a dream come true but for one college student a trip to paradise nearly ended in tragedy. Plymouth University student 25-year-old Georgia Bradley was enjoying a walk along a beautiful sandy beach in Crete while her boyfriend was at a nearby café when two Greek men approached her and asked her to grab a drink with them.

The peaceful outing took a frightening turn for the worst after she refused their offer and the men turned violent. Miss Bradley said, “One of them grabbed me on the arm and I didn’t know what was going to happen. I was on my own and it was a very scary and difficult situation.”

At that very moment a small black stray dog came out of nowhere barking up a storm and licking at Bradley’s hand as if she knew she were in trouble and needed help. The commotion caused by the heroic stray dog saved the day, scaring away the two men.

Immediately following the incident the dog followed Bradley back to where she was staying, at which point she earned the name Pepper. Bradley saw Pepper many more times as well, “Pretty much every evening we saw her around outside the bars and restaurants, trying to get the attention of the tourists. Every time we got close to her she wouldn’t let you stroke her. She was very gentle, but was too scared to let you close.”

While in Greece Bradley did everything she could to find the stray dog a safe place to live. She even tried persuading a local animal shelter to take Pepper in, but her attempts were unsuccessful. Eventually her trip came to an end and it was time to return home to Calstock, Cornwall.

“When we left to go to the airport, we looked back and Pepper was running after the car. It was heartbreaking.”

As soon as Bradley returned home she had a new problem on her hands… she couldn’t stop thinking about the sweet dog that saved her life. Bradley said, “I took the soonest flight back out that I could, which was two weeks later. It was a real risk because we may never have found her again. But when we saw Pepper on the beach, it was the best feeling ever.”

After finding Pepper a second time the dog had to be confirmed as a stray, microchipped, given vaccinations and a pet passport as well as quarantined for 21 days. Post-quarantine Bradley took her third flight to Crete to pick up Pepper and take her new dog home for good.

Bradley said, “It has been such a crazy journey. But I am over the moon. Pepper has settled in brilliantly.”
