It was a little over 2 1/2 years ago when Florida resident Christian McPhilamy made the decision to grow his hair out long. He was only 6-years-old at the time when a TV commercial for a St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital inspired him to take action.
As his beautiful blonde hair grew longer and longer he was often mistaken for a girl and teased about it. He ignored the cruel jokes and misconceptions, knowing his end goal of making wigs for kids with cancer was much more important than the stupid things other kids had to say.
In an interview with Florida Today Christian said, “Some people tried to call me a girl.” He admits that this made him feel “not very good,” but he was too strong to let anything get in his way, which is exactly what makes him such a hero.
In the end Christian’s strong will, kind heart and determination won out. He successfully grew out 10-inches of his hair for the children’s cancer organization, Children With Hair Loss.
Christian McPhilamy was strong enough to endure two-and-a-half years of bullying while growing his hair out for a good cause.
In the end it was all worth it; he successfully grew his hair out an incredible 10-inches long.
His rightfully proud mother writes on Facebook, “He has endured an awful lot of criticism, and yes even bullying, throughout this time. From his peers calling him a girl to even coaches and family friends telling him he should cut it or offering him money to. Even still, he has never once, strayed from his goal and always took the time to educate others on why he made the choice to grow his hair. I am one proud mommy as always.”
After 2 ½ years his hair was finally long enough. His parents cut it off into 4 10-inch ponytails and donated the hair to Children With Hair Loss.
