These Creations Are Shockingly Realistic...And Also Completely Edible

If you’re in the market for a fancy cake but the usual array of pastel colors and frosting flowers seems a little dull, you could always take a trip to the weird side. Cake artist Annabel de Vetten runs the Conjurer’s Kitchen bakery, and she bears the nickname “Annabel Lecter” for a very good reason.

Many of de Vetten’s cakes feature incredibly detailed and super realistic recreations of human (and quasi-human) anatomy.

This one was inspired by an episode of Hannibal, where a murderer used his victims’ bodies to grow mushrooms. (As one does…?)

De Vetten got her start as a sculptor and painter, but she discovered her passion for baking and food art when she created her own wedding cake. The cake was a smashing success, and orders were soon pouring in. Today, she creates cakes for a number of famous clients, including parties for Showtime’s Dexter and a very interactive screening of Harold and Maude.

Some cakes have hidden surprises. This cake, for example, seems elegant when viewed from one side…

…but reveals a macabre surprise from the other!

This cake was inspired by a common question de Vetten gets about her cakes: “What do they look like inside?”

You might have noticed the somewhat morbid theme of her baking. De Vetten’s inspiration comes from the things she loves, like the horror genre, alternative art, medical oddities, and more. Her portfolio is vast, and includes everything from dragons, human body parts, and even Buffalo Bill’s woman suit from Silence of the Lambs.

Molded chocolates are also available, like these creepy baby heads on sticks.

These chocolates are molded and decorated to look like various diseases of the teeth and gums.

Just the thing you want to think about when you’re eating chocolate.

De Vetten is aware, of course, that her work isn’t to everyone’s taste. In fact, she’s perfectly okay with that. “I’m glad some people don’t like my work,” she says. “It would be such a boring world if everyone liked the same thing.”

She also likes the reactions people have when they see her visceral cakes. “You get that little thrill of eating something your eyes tell you not to, but your nose and taste buds urge to devour,” she said in an interview with Vice.

But no matter what people on the Internet say, the people who encounter her cakes in person eat them — and declare them delicious.

Her cakes get incredibly elaborate and incorporate all kinds of shapes and designs.

The perfect wedding cake for you goth kids out there.

Here’s another two-sided cake, looking cute from this vantage point…

…and considerably less so from this one.

Aside from baking and creating seemingly nonstop, de Vetten also hosts classes and events. Her chocolates are even available for sale on her shop. You can also check out all of her creations on her website and Facebook page, and get a deeper look at some of her processes on her blog.
