She Had To Cancel Their First Date, But The Shocking Truth Made Her Glad She Did

Online dating has become the new norm in our increasingly interconnected world. However, it’s still just as difficult to navigate as the real world, and possibly even more so. After all, meeting someone face-to-face is very different than chatting online. Anyone can say anything behind a screen and create an alternate reality for themselves.

You hear a lot about horror stories, ranging from the cringingly hilarious to the downright scary in the online dating world. Then, there’s this story about a woman named Crystal (not her real name), who dodged the biggest bullet ever in her short time on the Tinder app.

Crystal swiped right on this man, Minh Nguyen, back in November 2014. She said he seemed nice and attractive, and he was in her area. The two were matched and began chatting.

There was some typical banter, and Crystal was unavailable on the time Minh suggested meeting. Life got in the way, and Crystal forgot to contact him again. Oh well, she figured.

Crystal thought she might have missed out on a nice date, but didn’t think much about the missed connection until two months later. In January of this year, a familiar face appeared in the news that made Crystal’s heart stop.

You never want to see a surprise mugshot of someone you recognize, but this is much worse.

As the article describes, Minh shot to death the new husband of his ex-wife. He’d been married to his ex-wife for only about three months before they split, and had ongoing custody battles over their child. Crystal had no inkling of a child, and Minh had also lied about his age by a decade; in the Tinder profile, he stated he was 28. He was actually 38.

The articles coming out about the murder described Minh as “well-known” in tech circles and as the founder or co-founder of Plaxo, a social site purchased by Comcast in 2008. But later, that was also revealed to be a lie.

It turns out that, since he did work in a tech field, he knew a few members of the company, but he never worked there and certainly never founded it. Still, he was listed as “founder” on his LinkedIn profile.

And then it got even better. And by “better,” we mean “pants-soilingly more terrifying.”

In total, Minh was found to have seven guns (some of which were loaded), several swords and knives, a taser, two axes, three compound bows, and four crossbows. There was also ammo stored all over his house in various hiding places, and an empty bottle of amphetamine salts.

Needless to say, after all this, Crystal, who had almost gone on a date with Minh, was rattled. She says she still occasionally swipes through the dating app, but with understandably much less enthusiasm now. She didn’t want her identity revealed, but she wanted to share her story as a warning for people in the online dating world to always be careful. Crystal’s story should prove that not everything you see online is real.
