22 Hours After The Quake, Workers Found Something In The Rubble That'll Leave You Crying

A series of powerful earthquakes ripped through Nepal on April 25, causing widespread damage and loss of life in surrounding cities and towns. The earthquakes are believed to have been the most violent in the area since 1934, and they’re estimated to have killed more than 6,100 people. Even after the quakes, victims are still being recovered among the rubble.

One story, however, is standing out as a beacon of hope in a dark time.

When his family’s house collapsed, four-month-old Sonit Awal became trapped underneath the rubble. Rescue workers did everything they could to free him, but had to return the following day when their initial efforts were unsuccessful. Sonit had been trapped for 22 hours and his family was ready to give up hope…until something amazing happened: Sonit’s father, Shyam Awal, heard his son cry out.

While an anxious crowd watched, rescuers reached into the rubble…

…And pulled out Sonit — alive and relatively well.

Sonit was taken to Bhaktapur Hospital for a checkup, and was declared to have no injuries.

While this story had a happy and miraculous ending, there are thousands of people still facing loss and struggling to pick up the pieces from the earthquakes. If you’d like to help out, check out this list of organizations donating money and supplies to the people of Nepal.
