‘No Country For Old Men’ was being filmed in Marfa, Texas and ‘There Will Be Blood’ was shooting nearby.
Everything was going smoothly, but when directors Joel Coen and Ethan Coen were filming a wide shot for No Country For Old Men, a huge cloud of black smoke suddenly appeared and spoiled the shot!
Unaware of the fact that he was spoiling the other film crew’s shot, director for There Will Be Blood, Paul Thomas Anderson, was busy testing the pyrotechnics of a scene where gushing oil catches alight and turns into an enormous fiery red furnace, with black smoke billowing into the air.
This was the smoke that interfered with the Coens’ shot, and the filming of No Country For Old Men had to be put on hold for an entire day, allowing the smoke of the test to clear first.
No Country For Old Men won three Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Director and Best Writing Adapted Screenplay.
There Will Be Blood won Academy Awards for Best Actor and Best Cinematography.
