Want to lose weight? Physicists have the key to success

Every grocery store tabloid boasts bikini pictures of celebrities who have recently had babies or lost exorbitant amounts of weight with tantalizing headlines such as 'How She Got Her Bikini Bod Back' or 'So-And-So Reveals Her Dieting Secrets.'

Jessica Simpson signed a million dollar deal with Weight Watchers while she was pregnant with her first child. After her second baby, she is still a brand representative, having reached her goal weight. Kirstie Alley lost weight on Jenny Craig, regained it once off the diet, and is now, once again, a spokesperson for the brand to re-lose the weight.

Recently Melissa Joan Hart showed off her (you guessed it) bikini bod after losing 40 pounds using Nutrisystem. But what does it take to lose weight and keep it off? Physicists who specialize in energy conservation know, and it's no secret. It's science.

In fact, the first law of thermodynamics explains it all: Conservation of energy. If you want to lose a pound of fat, you can: A.) Hike to the top of a 2,500 story building, B.) Run 60 miles, or C.) Spend seven hours cleaning animal stalls

None sound too appealing? Well, it's because exercise alone is not the easiest way to lose fat. This is because fat is so energy dense. It packs 3,500food calories per pound. That is 15 times as much as in TNT. So the simple solution to weight loss: Eat less. Cut your calorie consumption by 600 calories per day, and you will lose a pound of fat per week. Science says so. So does Jessica Simpson. Pick your preferred source.
