This town in Antarctica may be the most remote town on earth—there are only three computers with internet access!

Chile has a territory on Antarctica that actually contains a town called Villa Las Estrellas. With a summer population of 120 and a winter population of 80, the town is located on a military base and is the larger of the two civilian settlements on the continent.


The town has a grades 1-8 primary school with two teachers who are tasked with teaching the towns 15 children. There is also a separate kindergarten which has one teacher for six students. The school has a library with 291 books and magazines that are available upon request, as well as the only three computers with internet access in the town.


Villa Las Estrellas has a hospital with one doctor and nurse who have basic medical and testing equipment. There is also a hostel and souvenir shop located in the town. There is one radio station and the town receives the main Chilean television stations via satellite. There is payphone which uses prepaid cards or coins, and since 2005, there has been a cell phone tower in the town.


One of the town's main community hubs is the gymnasium which is used for tennis, basketball and volleyball. The gym also has exercise machines, ping pong tables, and a sauna. Cultural activities and scientific talks are also held in the gymnasium.
