There is an ancient city under a lake in China that is more than 1300 years old!

There is an entire, magnificent city submerged in a man-made lake in China's Zhejiang Province. Shicheng City (meaning Lion City) is more than a 1,330 years old and is still very well preserved. It has been submerged under the water of Qiandao Lake since 1959.

It was submerged under the lake for the construction of the Xin'an River Hydropower Station. Archaeologists descriptively renamed the city "the time capsule" because it is still very similar to how it was more than a thousand years ago. Because it is shielded from wind, rain, and sun erosion, the city does not deteriorate.

Staircases in the ancient houses, walls, and memorial arches can be seen pretty much as they were ages ago. It was named after the Wu Shi Mountain (translated Five Lion Mountain) in the northern part of Sui'an County, Zhejiang and used to be the political, economical and cultural hub of the area.

Shicheng City has five city gates and each gate has a tower. Six streets connected the entire city and the gates. The streets are tidily paved with flagstones and pebbles and the beautiful carvings on the gates can still be seen in their original splendor. Altogether there are 265 arches in the city where time stood still.
