The tallest tree in the world is a redwood tree named Hyperion. The tree has been measured at 379.1 feet. It beat the previous record holder, a Stratosphere Giant, which was 370.5 feet in height. In other words, Hyperion is taller by just over 8.5 feet.
While it is known to be located somewhere in California, it's exact location is kept secret, despite the fact that many people would like to have an answer as to where it is. Researchers are fearful that if the information were to be leaked to the public, an influx of visitors could be damaging to the local ecosystem.
In parks near the coast of Northern California, other trees that rivaled and surpassed the height of the Stratosphere Giant have been discovered. These discoveries have led some to believe that there had formerly been even more trees of similar monumental size and age.
Sadly, many have been cut down. On the bright side, many of these ancient trees have also been saved from destruction.
It is unfortunate that the well-being of the environment must constantly be guarded. There are some careless people who can damage nature and prevent everyone else from enjoying it's wonder.
