Stilton blue cheese is know to cause bizarre dreams, and no one knows why!

A strange thing happens when people consume Stilton blue cheese before bed. The British Cheese Board (BCB) conducted a survey in 2005 in which 75% of men and 85% of women reported experiencing "odd and vivid" dreams after eating a 20-gram serving of the cheese a half an hour prior to sleeping.

Stilton is not a brand, so what exactly is "Stilton cheese?" It's a label similar to the one put on "Champagne." Stilton cheese has been granted the status of a protected designation of origin by the European Commission.

Only three counties may produce cheese considered "Stilton," and there are currently only five dairies licensed to make it. There are also certain other specific criteria that a blue cheese must meet to be considered "Stilton."

So should you avoid eating this cheese before going to sleep? Well the dreams are definitely odd, but Nigel White, the Secretary of the BCB and one of the people responsible for the survey, personally doesn't consider them nightmares.

White gave two examples of the reported dreams in an interview with NPR. The first was of a vegetarian crocodile that was sad because he couldn't eat children, and the second was of soldiers fighting each other with kittens instead of guns.

Would you be willing to see what wacky dreams you end up with?
