Scientists have lowered alcohol levels in intoxicated mice by giving them tiny capsules (called nanocapsules) that contain enzymes. The enzymes assist in lowering blood alcohol levels. When similar treatment will become widely available for human use is yet to be determined.
The effectiveness of this form of treatment lies in simulating the function of the organelle, which is part of a cell. Achieving that goal has been very difficult.
As an experiment, researchers injected two capsules, each containing enzymes into mice. The enzymes produce a chemical compound that is of benefit for sobering up. Namely, it serves to reduce alcohol levels in the blood stream in a quick manner, as shown in research. The differences between the mice that had been injected and those that had not were drastic.
These discoveries have the potential to lead to the development of new drugs for human use. Some have been proposed that would be taken orally, and others may be taken through the skin, as in the case of the mice. In either case, the drugs would do the jobs of liver cells and assist in ridding the body of excess alcohol.
