The hip-hop group Beastie Boys' most famous song is a ballad about getting crazy, getting loud, and partying your butt off—except the trio were really parodying everything they thought was ridiculous. "Fight for Your Right (To Party!)" Isn't for the would-be party-people—it's really making fun of them!
The song was originally written by group member Adam Yaunch and friend Tom "Tommy Triphammer" Chushman. It originally set out to be a parody of those nonsense party songs like "I Wanna Rock," but the subtle background was lost on most listeners. Group-member Mike D said "The only thing that upsets me is that we might have reinforced certain values of some people in our audience when our own values were actually totally different." Talk about a backfire!
The band often had a solemn chuckle seeing people belting out the song, not realizing that it was actually making fun of people like them! Next time you pick out a favorite song, it might be in your best interest to look up the lyrics and meaning to make sure you're in on the joke, not part of it.
