Dice date back even further than written language! What were they used for back then?

Before our ancestors were busy writing down every little thing that happened, they were probably playing with dice. The little games of chance have been around since before recorded history!

Nobody is even really sure where they came from. The oldest dice in existence (that we've found) were excavated from a 5000-year-old backgammon set in south-eastern Iran. There is also evidence that suggests they came from an Indian game and have shown up in the Hindu epic “Mahabharata” where a game of dice leads to a great war.

Dice can also be found in the bible, called “casting lots” in Psalms 22 as well as a common form of amusement in Greece. People in Greece loved gambling so much, special rules and laws were put into place to forbid it. The children even spent so much time rolling dice that their horse-chasing (whatever that is) suffered.

It seems that no matter what time and place you find yourself in, there's bound top be someone doing something with dice.
