Brass doorknobs are more than just decoration, they protect us from germs! How?

Germaphobes look at every surface as another chance to get sick with another nasty disease. Faucets, elevator buttons, and worst of all, doorknobs all stand in the way of a happier, healthier you. Interestingly enough, not all surfaces harbor germs. In fact, some actually sanitize themselves!

The oligodynamic effect was discovered by Karl Wilhelm von Nageli in 1893.He found that some metal ions had a toxic effect on living cells, even if they aren't in high concentrations. Some of the most toxic metals include silver, copper, stainless steel, and aluminum. It makes sense that so many things that could make us sick (for example, silverware) are made of those bacteria-killing alloys.

Brass is another example of self-disinfecting metals, which makes them perfect for applications like doorknobs. Not only do they class up a joint with a brushed, golden look—they completely disinfect themselves in about eight hours. Unvarnished brass works the best for sanitary reasons and are the number one choice in hospitals.

A silver compound is used in large water tanks and ships because they keep stored water potable for several months.

Next time your germ-phobic mind starts to race before you touch something, make sure it's made of the right sanitary material!
