An Australian Prime Minister disappeared in 1967 and was never seen again!

There isn't a moment that goes by where at least a small group of people don't know where the United States president is. He is consistently surrounded by aides, Secret Service, or high-ranking officials. That wasn't the case with Australia's Prime Minister, Harold Holt, who disappeared back in 1967 and hasn't been seen since!

On December 17, 1967, Holt, a couple friends, and his bodyguards drove down to Melbourne to see yachtsman Alec Rose sail through Port Phillip Heads on his solo leg of circumnavigating the globe. Holt decided to go swimming at Cheviot Beach, despite the strong currents and dangerous rip tides.

He quickly disappeared from view after going in and the alert was raised to look for him. The Royal Australian Navy divers, police force, Royal Australian Air Force, Army personnel, and volunteers descended onto the beach for one of the largest search operations in Australian history.

After two days of finding nothing, the government made an official announcement that Holt was dead. The Country Party leader and Coalition Deputy Prime Minister John McEwen was sworn in as the new Prime Minister until the Liberals could elect a new one.

No trace of Holt was ever seen again.
