According to him, his motive for eating Brandes was a “sentimental one”; it was born from his desire for a younger brother he never had. He wanted “someone to be a part of [him].” The creepiest thing about this case was that Brandes actually consented to being killed and eaten, and so maybe can’t really be considered a victim.
Meiwes posted a call (on a website called Cannibal Café) for someone who would like to sacrifice themselves to his deranged childhood fantasy, and Brandes agreed. Still, Meiwes was eventually charged for murder and sentenced to life in prison.
Since then however, Meiwes has made some lifestyle changes. He is now into environmentalism and has sworn not to eat meat. According to a fellow convict, he now only sticks vegetarian dishes and finds the idea of factory farming as distasteful as his crime was. In 2007, he was elected the leader of a Green Party group in the high security prison where he is now serving his sentence.
