Next time you're having a rough day at work or dread going to class, just remember it could always be worse. Of course, everything can get exponentially better if you put your mind to it, like an orphaned teenage runaway from Uganda.
Christopher Ategeka was working on his uncle's farm as a human scarecrow at Lake Nyamirima in Uganda. One lucky day, a man came to Christopher's house, representing a charity in Fort Portal to send children to school. His abusive uncle would handily give out beatings if he tried to go, so he had to run away in secret, taking on the 14 mile trip on foot.
Christopher was sent to UC Berkeley in California where he earned a pair of degrees in mechanical engineering and is studying for yet another. In his small amount of free time he managed to build a nonprofit and a biotech company.
His inspirational story led to his invite to give a TED talk. Just goes to show you, if you feel like you're standing in a field being a scarecrow, make a change! You never know where you can end up.
