Are you ready for some football?! How about your electricity bill? Every season, fans flock to the giant stadiums to partake in their favorite past time. While they may be emptying their wallets for tickets, concessions, and souvenirs, the stadium owners are footing the energy bills—and they aren't cheap. Every game day at the Cowboys Stadium uses more electricity than the entire country of Liberia.
Big time football fan and energy analyst, Bob Brackett, brought the question up after Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf stated the heart of Texas football uses more power than the 3.7 million population nation, which ranks 184th in the world for energy consumption. That's not too impressive—in fact a single natural gas well in the Marcellus shale formation could power Liberia for years.
The Cowboys AT&T Stadium cost about $1.2 billion to build, which is about half of Liberia's entire GDP. The incredibly impressive scoreboard costs $40 million, a worthy investment when it lights up its 25,000-square-foot LED.
While the 10 megawatts it takes to power the stadium on game day may blow Liberia's power consumption out of the water, most days it sits fairly empty. Still, considering there are 32 teams with power-hungry stadiums, Liberia's power consumption can't compete.
