Of course they had to secure a permit for something that drastic, which made the whole thing even more absurd! They initially wanted to levitate the building 30 feet into the air, but the authorities drew the line at three feet. Still, three feet was still admirable considering that it was the largest office building in the world!
About 100,000 protesters gathered at the Lincoln Memorial and about half the crowd marched over the Memorial Bridge to the Pentagon. Several hundred people started chanting and singing in order to levitate the building.
On another side of the building, several thousand federal troops and a couple hundred U.S. Marshals tried to protect the Pentagon steps by using tear gas, rifle butts and arrests to stay on top of the masses and the seeming chaos. Needless to say, the Pentagon did not budge, but the country's attention was focused on the cause: To end the war in Vietnam.
