An NYPD cop secretly recorded corrupt activities for 17 months, leading to a huge scandal and investigations. You'll be shocked by what he found.

Adrian Schoolcraft was a policeman with the New York City Police Department. He came up with a plan to record their day to day activities so as to prevent false accusations of wrongdoing. The project lasted 17 months, during which time he went around with a recorder about the size of a pack of gum in his pocket, capturing everything.

The things heard on the recorder were enraging. Corruption was running wild. High-ranking officers ordered lower-ranking officers to violate proper conduct and do all kinds of things that police should not have any part in.

As a taste of some of the things going on, illegal arrests were made, excessive tickets were written, people were being stopped and frisked more than necessary, and there were serious crimes, even rape, that were brushed off as lesser ones. The officers were worried about their precinct’s reputation. If word got out that crime was a major problem, it would make them look bad.

All of this led to a series of investigations and people losing their jobs. In the end, it led to some needed changes taking place. Schoolcraft’s father was also a police officer. The influence of his father gave him a great respect for what the police SHOULD be doing.
