After finishing Star Trek, William Shatner was so poor he had to live out of his truck. Find out more about his life

William Shatner is an icon in the entertainment and nerd world, treated like a king at every convention he attends. That wasn't always the case for the old U.S.S. Enterprise captain, though. When the shortly-lived but infamous show “Star Trek” finished, he literally had nowhere to go.

The original series debuted in 1966 and lasted for three seasons until 1969 when it was canceled. When that happened, Captain James T. Kirk (actor William Shatner) took to his pickup truck as a home. It was the early 1970s and Shatner was recently divorced with three kids and no money. He went back east to work but couldn't afford any stays at hotels.

Under the hard shell on the back of his truck was a makeshift home: a small stove and a toilet. Even though the living conditions were tight, he managed to have a roommate: his dog.

Even though he's come a long way since then, he still says he feels he hasn't achieved much. “I've done nothing. What have I done? I've blundered my way through life.” He may feel his name will fade, but to the millions of Trekkies around the world, his tale will live on for sure.
