Lake Hillier is a lake in Western Australia that is completely and naturally PINK!

Except for its Pepto-Bismol pink color, Lake Hillier is a relatively unremarkable lake on Middle Island, the largest of the islands in the Recherche Archipelago of Western Australia.

With a pink color so vibrant it can be seen from passing airplanes, Lake Hillier is largely a mystery. The color persists year round, and will even remain when the water is removed from the lake.

While the reason for the dramatic coloration of Lake Hillier has never been proven, other salt lakes that exhibit similar coloration get their hue from salt loving bacteria like Dunaliella salina and Halobacteria. The pink is similar to that found in fancy Himalayan rock salt.
