Advertising is a sneaky, dark business in some cases. A company will do just about anything for your hard earned money, and are willing to pay a handsome sum to make sure it's on their product instead of their competitor. As Don Draper says, “Advertising is based on one thing: Happiness.” Would you like your mints with the hip, new, non-existent ingredient Retsyn? Of course you do!

Certs makes mints with a fancy ingredient that they created called Retsyn. What is it? Just their lingo for mixing oil and flavor, something that every mint does. They trademarked the term and started a marketing campaign to highlight the facts that their mints were the only ones available with Retsyn. So special!

To break down Retsyn from the mouth of Cadbury Adams, makers of Certs, it's “a combination of partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil, copper gluconate and flavoring.” Health nuts may cringe at the partially hydrogenated part, because that means that the tiny mints contain trans-fat, though very little. Yet, the National Academy of Sciences states that “the only safe intake of trans-fat is zero.”
