When Microsoft shut down the Halo 2 server, a group of users vowed to never log out. Their story is one for the ages.

When Microsoft shut off Xbox Live Servers in favor of the Xbox360 in April 2010, players were unable to log back in once they logged out. The idea of this was to slowly let gamers play out their games until they’re done. However, there was quite the resistance to the shutdown of the Halo 2 servers, and many gamers refused to logout of Xbox Live.

It became a fun-filled stance against the server shutdown, with all the players that refused to logout becoming a kind of online community as they continued battling each other online. As the players held out, players began lagging out or having their Xboxes overheat, leading to the end of their Halo 2 multiplayer.

They started a community blog (viewable at the source). They played and played and played. They refused to logout. One by one, members dropped away until there was only two left. Finally, after 26 days, Microsoft forced them to logout, and the server was shutdown.
