Liechtenstein sent 80 soldiers into battle during the Austro-Prussian War, and 81 returned! What happened?

Today, Liechtenstein is a neutral country and does not maintain an army. But during the Austro-Prussian War of 1868, they sent an army of 80 men, all of whom survived—and they brought a friend home with them! At some point during the war, they came across an Italian soldier who decided that he would rather return toLiechtenstein than his home.

True, they weren’t involved in any fighting, but it is not uncommon for soldiers to die from training accidents, “friendly fire”, or exposure to the elements.

If you’ve never heard of Liechtenstein, it’s probably because it’s only about the size of Manhattan and has a population of about 35,000. A small but extremely wealthy alpine country, double landlocked by Switzerland and Austria, it is a popular winter sports destination.

It’s also the world’s largest exporter of false teeth!
