Eminem could've starred in Elysium but he demanded the film be shot in Detroit!

On August 9, 2013, the film "Elysium" was released. The sci-fi thriller starred Matt Damon and Jodie Foster. The film takes places on a nearly destroyed Earth and on Elysium, a utopian space habitat. The plot explores current day issues like immigration and health care.

The film was written and directed by Neill Blonkamp who also wrote and directed the 2009 film "District 9." He first offered the lead role to Ninja, a South African rapper and big "District 9" fan judging by the D9 tattoo on his upper lip. However, he turned it down. Blonkamp next offered the role to famed American rapper Eminem.

Eminem wanted the film to be shot in his hometown of Detroit. The studio producing the film said this was not an option though. So the role went to Blonkamp's third choice, Matt Damon. Thus far, the film has grossed over $97 million worldwide.
