In 2007, Dutch television came up with a creative way to encourage people to become organ donors. They devised a television show called "De Grote Donorshow" or "The Big Donor Show" where three contestants would compete for the kidney of a terminally ill woman.
This may sound like something out of the Hunger Games, and it turns out the show was a hoax. This was revealed just as the patient was about to choose the person who would receive her kidney. The "donor" was an actress, but the three patients were actual patients that were in on the hoax.
Since the show started, the number of people signing up as organ donors did indeed jump. Usually, it was about 3,000 - 4,000 a month but had increased to around 12,000. Well that's one way to get more organ donors.
