In 2007, the Chicago alternative rock radio station Q101 decided to play a little prank on their listeners. The prank could also be characterized as a little social experiment. The station played a new song called "The Great Divide" by an anonymous band.
The song became very popular and was one of the station's most requested songs. Three weeks after DJs started playing it, they announced that the song was actually by the trio of brothers band Hanson.
Poor Hanson. They got such a bad rap after Mmmbop (which is actually an incredibly catchy song). As the anonymous song's popularity proves, Hanson is more than a one hit wonder. The question is, would the song have been nearly as popular if audiences knew who wrote it?
